FUD stands for "fear, uncertainty and doubt". In crypto, it describes negative news, rumours or opinions that spread fear and push people to sell. The term is much older than crypto.
How is the word used?
FUD can refer to genuine concerns, for example about tighter rules, a hack at an exchange or a bug in the software. It can also mean false or exaggerated stories spread on purpose. Sometimes people who want to buy cheaply spread FUD to get others to sell.
The word is also misused. In crypto communities, criticism is sometimes dismissed as FUD to avoid answering it. Fair criticism of a project is not FUD just because it is uncomfortable.
How to respond to FUD
When a negative story takes off, ask: who is saying this, where does it come from, and what does it actually change? Check reliable sources before you decide anything.
