Paper wallet

A private key and wallet address printed on paper. Paper wallets were popular in Bitcoin's early years but are now seen as outdated and risky.

A paper wallet is a sheet of paper with a private key and a wallet address printed on it, often with QR codes. The crypto itself isn't on the paper. It is on the BlockchainBlockchainA public ledger where transactions are grouped into blocks, each linked to the one before, so past records can't be altered without it showing., as always. The paper holds the private keyPrivate keyA secret number that proves you own the crypto in your wallet. Whoever holds the private key controls the crypto. that gives access to it, so whoever has the paper controls the crypto.

Why were they used?

In Bitcoin's early years there were few ways to keep keys offline. A paper wallet was a simple way to make a cold walletCold walletA way of storing the keys to your crypto completely offline, so hackers on the internet can't reach them.: the key was generated on a website or in a program, printed out and then deleted from the computer. Some people also gave bitcoin as a gift this way, in an envelope or on a card.

Why are they outdated?

Paper wallets are rarely used now, and most people who know the field advise against them:

  • The key is created on a computer. If the website or computer that generated it was compromised, someone else may have a copy. Printers can also keep documents in memory.
  • Spending part of it is tricky. To send from a paper wallet you have to type the key into a hot wallet, and then it is no longer cold. If you send only part of the balance, the rest often goes to a new address in the software, not back to the paper. Many people have lost money this way.
  • Paper doesn't last. Ink fades, and paper survives neither water nor fire.
  • No seed phrase. Older paper wallets hold a single key, not a seed phraseSeed phraseA list of 12 or 24 words that backs up every key in your wallet, so whoever has the words can restore the wallet and take the crypto. that restores a whole wallet.

What do people use instead?

Most people who want to keep crypto offline now use a hardware walletHardware walletA small device that keeps private keys offline and signs transactions inside the device, so the keys never reach your computer or phone.. The keys are created inside the device and never leave it, while the seed phrase is written on paper or stamped into a metal plate.

That isn't the same as a paper wallet. A seed phrase on paper is a backup, but the keys are used in a device that signs transactions without revealing them. If you have an old paper wallet, the safest move is to transfer everything on it in one go to a new wallet.
