Trading volume is the total value of all trades in a particular coin over a given period. Price sites usually show the volume for the last 24 hours, in krónur or US dollars. It tells you how much is being bought and sold, and so how active the market is.

How to read it

If a coin has a 24-hour volume of ISK 2 billion, units worth that amount changed hands. Each trade is counted once, since every buyer has a seller on the other side.

High volume usually means good LiquidityLiquidityHow easily an asset can be bought or sold quickly at a fair price, without the trade moving the price much.. You can buy and sell without moving the price much. When volume is low, a single large sale can move the price a lot.

It helps to compare volume with market capitalisationMarket capitalisationThe total value of all units of a coin in circulation, calculated as the price of one unit times the number of units.. A coin with a high market cap but little trading may be harder to sell than the numbers suggest.

What to watch out for

Volume can be inflated. Some exchanges have been found to show wash trading, where the same party buys from and sells to itself to make the market look busier. That counts as market manipulation and is banned under MiCA.

A sudden jump in volume often follows news or sharp price swingsVolatilityHow much and how quickly the price of an asset moves up and down.. It shows interest, but says nothing about whether the price will go up or down.
