An all-time high (ATH) is the highest price a coin or other asset has ever reached. When the price goes above its previous peak, it is said to have set a new all-time high. The opposite is an all-time lowAll-time low (ATL)The lowest price a coin or other asset has ever been recorded at. (ATL).

How is it measured?

Crypto all-time highs are usually measured in US dollars. The exact figure can differ slightly between exchanges and price sites. In krónur, the peak can fall on a different day, because the króna's exchange rate against the dollar moves too.

Bitcoin is a good example. Its price reached an all-time high of around 69,000 dollars in November 2021. A bear marketBear marketA long period when market prices mostly fall and investors are pessimistic. followed, and it took more than two years, until March 2024, for the price to climb back above that peak.

Why does it matter?

News of a new all-time high draws a lot of attention and pulls new people into the market. In a bull marketBull marketA long period when market prices mostly rise and investors are optimistic., new highs can come one after another. That can fuel FOMOFOMOThe fear of missing out, which pushes people to buy in a hurry when prices rise fast, often close to the top., and many people buy exactly when the price is at its highest.

An all-time high says nothing about the future. Prices can keep rising after a new peak, but they can also drop fast. Many coins have never returned to their old highs. Price sites often show how far the current price is from the all-time high. That number tells you how much the price has moved, not where it is heading.
