What the licence covers

Custody

Custody and administration

We hold and administer crypto-assets on behalf of our clients.

Crypto and krónur

Exchange for funds

You buy crypto and sell it back for funds.

Crypto to crypto

Exchange between crypto-assets

You swap one crypto-asset directly for another.

Transfers

Transfer services

We send crypto-assets to your own wallet or another platform.

As of October 2026, Myntkaup is the only entry on the Central Bank's register of crypto-asset service providers.

How your assets are held

We use a hybrid custody setup that balances quick access with security.

No single key

We use multi-party computation (MPC) technology from Fireblocks. The key is split into several parts held in separate systems, so an attacker would have to break into several systems at once.

Licensed sub-custodians

A significant part of client assets is held by Coinbase in Luxembourg and Kraken in Ireland. Both are licensed crypto-asset service providers in the EU.

An exact record for every client

Some assets sit in pooled (omnibus) wallets, but our system records exactly what belongs to each client at all times.

Your assets are yours

  • Legally segregated from Myntkaup's own assets.
  • Protected from creditors if the company went bankrupt.
  • Never lent out or used for our own investments.

Withdraw whenever you want

Withdrawals are made in the app or on the web. There are two routes.

To an Icelandic bank account

Sell your crypto to receive USDC, then request a bank withdrawal. Withdrawals are processed every day and usually arrive the same day, often within hours.

Bank withdrawal guide

To your own wallet

Every supported coin except USDC can be sent to your own wallet on the coin's native network.

Crypto withdrawal guide

Every withdrawal is confirmed with your PIN in the app and by email. Unusually large withdrawals may need a manual security check before funds are sent.

Who is responsible if something goes wrong

Myntkaup is liable

  • When a loss is caused by an incident within our control, such as a cyberattack on our systems or theft by an employee.
  • We then refund the market value of the lost assets.

Outside our control

  • Failures of the blockchain itself or 51% attacks on the network.
  • You letting an unauthorised person into your account.
